Changing jobs in Sweden

Changing Jobs

Changing jobs while holding a resident permit in Sweden can be a complex process, but with the right steps, it can be done smoothly. If you are currently working in Sweden with a resident permit that is tied to a specific company, you must inform the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) of any changes to your employment, including a change of jobs. In this article, we will discuss the steps you need to take to change jobs in Sweden while holding a resident permit.

The first step is to inform Migrationsverket before you start your new job. This is important because the agency needs to evaluate whether or not your new job meets the requirements for the residence permit. The agency also needs to ensure that the new job is not in violation of any rules or regulations related to resident permits.

Once you have informed the agency of your intention to change jobs, you will need to apply for a new permit that is tied to your new employer. This application process is similar to the process of applying for a resident permit for the first time. The new employer will also have to apply for a work permit on your behalf. This process can take several weeks to complete, so it is important to plan ahead and start the process as early as possible.

When applying for a new resident permit, you will need to provide the agency with several documents, including proof of your new employment, proof of your qualifications and skills, and proof of your financial stability. The agency will also conduct a background check to ensure that you do not have any criminal history or other issues that would make you ineligible for a resident permit.

In addition to applying for a new resident permit, you will also need to inform the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) of your change of employment. You will need to provide them with your new employer’s details, including their name and address, as well as your new salary and other income information. This is important because your tax liability will change with your new employment.

Changing jobs within two years: Your work permit is tied to your employer for the first two years. In your residence permit, your job type and employer name would be mentioned. If you are changing jobs within that period, you would need to submit a new application for a work permit. You can stay in the country and start working for your new employer after applying for a new work permit. But you have to make sure that you apply before your earlier work permit expires. You also need to male sure the job you are taking was advertised in Sweden, the EU/EEA and Switzerland before you start working. Your new employer would start the application process for the work permit, and you will need to get in the process similar to how it worked during your first work permit.

Changing jobs after two years: By this time, you would have got your work permit renewed which means you can change jobs within the same profession mentioned in your work permit. You would need to submit a fresh application if you are changing your profession.
